Donald Trump’s Personality According To Psychologists

Donald Trump's personality according to psychologists

Donald Trump’s personality continues to worry mental health experts. Does he suffer from some kind of psychological disorder? His theatrical behavior, his narcissism, his lack of empathy or his impulsiveness generate mistrust in many collectives, including those who work with him on a daily basis. Moreover, the power he wields means that, in the event that these suspicions are verified, his personality and his actions could constitute a real threat to any living being on the planet.

Since Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, several reports relating to his mental health have been published. It is also important to point out that this leads to many ethical issues.

First, it is illegal for behavioral and health science professionals to report on people who  have not previously been rigorously assessed. “How well are their assumptions made?” Here is another question that should be taken into consideration if we are to achieve a psychological diagram of the character.

However,  the real problem is that we are not up against just any public figure. The personality of Donald Trump, with his ups and downs, his reactions, his  tweets  and his behavior generates above all mistrust. And the unpredictable is a risk factor when it comes to a public figure who brings together so much power.

What we know about Donald Trump’s personality is inferred from his public behavior. Without going too far, just a few days ago, during his state visit to Japan, we saw him perform a scene that has once again been seen around the world. The scene unfolded as he and Japanese Minister Shinzo Abe paused to feed some red carp from Koi Pond.

As is customary in Japanese culture, every act has its ceremonial, and Minister Abe began slowly and patiently tossing the food to the fish. Donald Trump, enemy of patience and ceremonial, ends up turning the box to spill all the food in one movement.

Beyond the anecdotal, it was once again mentioned on this occasion a point that had already been the subject of warning from many people, from professors at Yale University but also from the organization. Mental Health “A Duty to Warn”:  Donald Trump may not be fit for this position.

However, before reporting the disorders to which these people specifically refer, it is advisable to analyze his public behavior in order to be able to deduce his personality. It would be the following.

Donald trump
  • Donald Trump does not like rules, protocols, being criticized or being questioned. He often challenges the status quo and does not take orders. If we add impulsiveness to these behaviors, we have what in DSM-5 is classified as antisocial behavior.
  • He has a very short attention span. He shows little interest in opinions different from his own, his mental schemas are very rigid, and his ability to process written information is limited. He limits himself to living in the present moment, giving the feeling of not evaluating the long-term consequences that his behavior could generate.
  • He has a clearly narcissistic personality. He also tends to trust very few people and tends to apply a dichotomous thinking about his relationships: you are a friend or an enemy, you are a patriot or you are not.
  • He appears to have poor impulse control.
  • He is wary of intellectuals, he qualifies journalists as “dangerous” characters  and avoids any person qualified in a particular field because he assumes that the latter will maintain a point of view contrary to his and will thus highlight his errors.
  • He is very skilled socially, but this ability has only one purpose: to be the center of attention. If he doesn’t, he feels frustrated and angry.

Experts have pointed out that Donald Trump meets several criteria published by the DSM-V. Factors that would determine at least three personality disorders, namely:  narcissistic personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder and paranoid personality disorder.

We stress once again that all of this is just an appreciation of President Trump’s public behavior. We should not draw definitive conclusions from this. These are guesses published by a group of experts who want to highlight an aspect that, in essence, is important:  Before a politician takes a position of power, he should go through a series of tests to assess his psychological aptitude.

To conclude, we do not know if the personality of Donald Trump would come close, as many say, to the famous dark triad of personality (narcissism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism), nor if this is really dangerous given the function that it is. he exerse.

Perhaps it is mere appearances, one of the masks of a character who, while disturbing, remains  harmless . Time will tell, let’s just hope he limits himself to assuming his position and, at worst, accumulating innocent anecdotes such as the one that took place in Japan with the red carp.
